SECRET STRANGELOVE 2018 FOLKESTONE, ENGLAND

Featuring work by Joel Snowman, Leigh Mulley, Cosmic Thoughts and Matt Rowe

Secret Strangelove returned  with a pop-up five hour exhibition consisting of film, photography, print and sound. It brought together four artists, who each consider the bridge between past, present and future.

The exhibition questioned whether Folkestone offer a unique palette for sound, paint, photography and video, when charged with a narrative so close to so many hearts and memories? Would placing an one off exhibition within the derelict building, halfway through its regeneration, provoke questions surrounding the impact of reflection? Each work demonstrates an eerie sense of both belonging and loss.

Joel Snowman’s film Rotunda sparked the initial idea for this exhibition. Shot around a folkestone landmark building, that was the last remnant of the former seaside development that began in the 1930’s and effectively ended when Folkestone stopped being a ferry port in 2000. Presenting a mixture of home video taken from the internet and his own footage taken 20 years later at the beginning of the redevelopment of the old Folkestone Rotunda site in 2017. The film is accompanied by a soundtrack from Kent based band Cosmic Thoughts, a group of musicians, including George (of Hot Salvation Records), Scott, Ross, Mark and Chris,  who compose and play nationally.

Matt Rowe has been documenting the rise and fall of Folkestone for over a decade. Here he presents two photographs made during this transition period in Folkestone’s history.

Leigh Mulley, has three large scale murals in Folkestone and in this exhibition she presents two digital prints of her super-realist paintings that look back at the hey days of the Rotunda.
