Dominic Muldowney (1952) studied music at York University and privately with Sir Harrison Birtwistle, who later invited him to be Music Director at the National Theatre, London, writing music for over 100 productions 1976-1997.
For the concert hall he has written a sequence of concerti (for piano, saxophone, oboe, violin, percussion, trumpet and trombone) and three full-length ballets including The Brontës for Gillian Lynne.
His radio opera The Voluptuous Tango won the Prix Italia and the Gold Award for Best Radio Drama at the Sony Drama Awards, later receiving its stage premiere as part of the Hoxton New Music Days, London.
He has written much music for TV and film including The Ploughman’s Lunch, ‘1984’ with Richard Burton and John Hurt, The Ginger Tree, Sharpe, Bloody Sunday and Wallander.
Other works include Leaves on the Line, premiered at the BBC Proms by The King’s Singers, The Fall of Jerusalem for Leeds Festival Chorus, a ‘War Oratorio’ for Channel4 and a Second Piano Concerto which was premiered by Angela Hewitt.
The recent lockdown has seen a flurry of work produced - ‘Nocturnal’ being one of a dozen ‘ soundscapes’ written this year.
