These new site-specific performative works follows directly on from his building interventions, which saw him cutting directly into the walls of museums and galleries, including Tate Modern, The British Museum, Muse Bellas Arts, Caracas and MACBA in Barcelona.
If there is a single characteristic of Smith’s work, it is site specificity. His sculptural building interventions ranging from domestic houses to museums are distinctive in their specific response to each building.
Smith’s performance work continues this ethos, but the more complexed nature of site is explored in the physicality of the performers, the study of movement and sound and the particular physical site of the performance.
Smith’s process is improvised and collaborative. Since lockdown he has been creating performance scores, learning how to choreograph and direct movement. Principle performance collaborators are Ash McNaughton and Lise Boucon. Thre has been input and original scores by the celebrated jazz flutist and composer Paul Cheneour. Crucial has been the advice of the renowned British composer John Woolrich have been critical, on his role as consultant.
TERRY SMITH
Terry smith studied BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths School of Art in 1974-78. He has been the recipient of a number of national and international awards including in 2008 The Paul Hamlyn Artist Award. He lives and works in Folkestone.
In a four year period 1994/98 Smith undertook a series of building interventions, breaking into abandoned buildings and creating wall cuttings in houses ready to be demolished. He has presented his work in solo exhibitions and group shows in London and internationally recently including; The Drawing Center New York; His celebrated performance work The Foundlings was presented at Ca ‘Pesaro Museo Internazionale d'Arte Moderna, Venice in 2014.
