Calais, french port town, as exceptional as ordinary, coveted and strongly guarded frontier city, but also a calm and quiet town where life goes on to blind people from the misery that lies there. In this video Calais feels like a science-fiction movie, where control whether visible or invisible is omnipresent, dividing the city, the neighborhoods, the streets and everything that goes on there.
Annabelle Amoros is a peculiar kind of animal. She works amidst a phantasmagorical "rurality", creates universes as nests, visits other people’s worlds and while in them, stops time and then disappears. Her vision of these chunks of life which are inherently stark, allows her to transform, seemingly without addressing directly, every inhabitant into a main character. We can feel all of her kindness and even her admiration for these small country worlds from which she herself comes from. The sound work is remarkable, she transforms silence into a mental soundtrack that gains all of it’s weight thanks to the illusion of minimalism, which in reality shows the true mark of a perfectionist. Her work immerses you into into a forgotten world of everyday lights and sounds where the race towards “We don’t even know what anymore” is the official religion. Like Bill Viola, Annabelle Amoros plays on a chord that is inherently humane, her maturity and trajectory are indicators of a forthcoming succession of good news.
