Experimental film, experimental cinema or avant-garde cinema is a term used to define film-making that explores non-narrative forms and alternatives to traditional narratives or methods of working. The writer and artist Chris Meigh-Andrews has selected works by Andrew Demirjian (USA), Robert Cahen (France), Narsica Hirsch (Argentina) and Ruben Guzman (Argentina) Tessa Garland (UK), Masayuki Kwai (Japan), Vince Brifffa (Malta), Madelon Hooykaas (Netherlands), Jacques Perconte (France), Stuart Moore & Kayla Parker (UK), Visual Brains (Sei Kazama & Ohtsue Hatsune) (Japan), Terry Flaxton (UK).

Video art emerged towards the middle of the twentieth century, initially as a direct response to television as a ubiquitous and dominant influence on the domestic landscape. This Video-Art week has been curated by Isaac Leung (Videotage) & Jamie Wyld (Videoclub). Artists in the programme include: Anson Mak, Fan Popo, Matt Lambert, Lucie Rachel, Nicole Pun, and Jay Bernard. David Gryn is set to curate Programme 9 within our video-art week.

Animation is a growing and established medium for artists and filmmakers. Featured in this programme is; Abigail Addison (Animate), Japanese animation auteurs, selected by curator and critic Nobuaki Doi. We will also be showing works by artists including; Astrid Goldsmith, Paul Bush & David Shrigley.

Documentaries are a key part of Strangelove festival. How we look at and examine the world is key to our understanding other people’s views ideas and concepts. What is a documentary? “A nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspects of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.” (Wikipedia). James Collie, Director of Folkestone Quarterhouse Doc Club and Violet Pictures, has selected - Randall Christopher, Daisy Jacobs and Don Hertzfeldt to feature in Programme 1. We have a special in focus on the work of David Bickerstaff, an award-winning filmmaker who founded Atomictv in 1997, for Programme 2.
